A good dog lead is one of those everyday essentials you probably don't give much thought to until you're trying to find the right one!
With so many styles, materials and lengths available, choosing a lead can feel surprisingly complicated. Whether you're heading out for a countryside walk, exploring woodland trails or enjoying a stroll around town, the right lead should be comfortable to handle, practical and suited to both you and your dog.
Here are a few things worth considering before you buy.
1. Think About Where You Walk
Your usual walking environment is a good place to start.
For everyday walks, a standard clip lead offers a straightforward, versatile option. It attaches securely to a suitable collar or harness and is easy to put on and remove.
Slip leads are another option, particularly popular with working dog owners. Combining a collar and lead in one, they're convenient for situations where you need to put a lead on and take it off quickly. They do, however, require careful fitting and handling and aren't suitable for every dog.
If you regularly walk in different environments, you may find that having more than one lead style is useful.

2. Consider the Length
Lead length can make a difference to your walking experience.
A shorter lead offers closer control when walking near roads, through busy areas or anywhere you need to keep your dog nearby.
A slightly longer lead gives your dog more room to move and explore while remaining connected to you.
At Só Madra, our handcrafted rope leads are available in a range of lengths, typically between 100cm and 150cm, depending on the design. We also make our leads in any length if you have a specific request.
The best choice depends on your dog's size, your walking environment and how you prefer to handle the lead.
3. Choose Materials That Work for You
Your dog's lead needs to cope with regular use, so materials matter.
Rope leads are a popular choice for active dogs and owners who enjoy the outdoors. At Só Madra, we use marine-grade double-braid rope, selected for its strength, flexibility and durability.
It's comfortable to hold, practical for everyday adventures and available in a range of colours classic country shade.
Quality fittings matter too. Strong, well-made clips and carefully finished joins all contribute to a lead you can use with confidence.
4. Don't Overlook Comfort
A lead might look fantastic, but it also needs to feel good in your hand.
Consider the thickness of the rope, how it feels when you're holding it and whether the handle suits your preferred grip.
A well-made lead should be comfortable to handle during everyday walks, although no lead can prevent discomfort or injury if a dog pulls suddenly or strongly.
5. Buy for Your Dog, Not Just the Colour!
It's tempting to choose a lead purely because you love the colour and there's nothing wrong with wanting something that looks good!
But think about your dog's size, behaviour and walking habits first.
A lead that's perfect for a relaxed adult dog may not be the best option for a young, enthusiastic dog still learning to walk comfortably on a lead.
Choose the style and construction that best suit your needs, then enjoy picking your favourite colour.
