Made by hand on the Scottish coast

Marine rope spliced by hand, leather cut and finished by hand, and solid brass and stainless steel fittings chosen to cope with sea air and wet walks.

What goes into every Só Madra collar and lead

Every Só Madra collar and lead is individually handcrafted in my home workshop in Scotland, using carefully selected materials and traditional techniques.

From marine-grade rope and hand-finished leather to quality brass and stainless steel fittings, every detail is chosen with strength, durability and everyday use in mind.

Here's a little insight into the craftsmanship behind each piece.

Marine rope, chosen for strength and softness

Marine Rope: Strong, Practical and Adventure-Ready

I use marine-grade double-braid rope, chosen for its strength, flexibility and durability.

Originally designed for demanding marine environments, this rope is well suited to life with active dogs. It's comfortable to handle, resistant to rot and quick to dry, making it a practical choice for everything from countryside walks to coastal adventures.

And when things get muddy? Simply rinse it clean and allow it to dry naturally.

Hand-spliced, so there's no knot to slip

Hand-Splicing: Traditional Skills, Lasting Strength

Hand-splicing is a traditional technique used in sailing and marine industries to create strong, secure joins in rope without the need for knots.

The process involves carefully weaving the end of the rope back into its own braided core. As tension is applied, the outer braid grips the rope inside, creating a firm, reliable connection.

Unlike bulky knots, which can reduce a rope's strength, a well-made splice retains much of its original strength while creating a smooth, neat finish.

It's a time-honoured skill that takes patience and precision, but the result is a strong, durable join that's both practical and beautifully finished.

The leather

Handcrafted Leather: Quality That Develops Character

My leather collars and leads are made using premium vegetable-tanned leather, sourced from trusted UK suppliers.

Each piece is carefully cut and shaped by hand, with the edges burnished and polished to create a smooth, comfortable finish.

Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its strength, durability and natural character. With use and proper care, it gradually softens and develops a beautiful patina, making every piece unique to its owner.

Hardware

Quality Fittings and Finishing Touches

The finishing details matter just as much as the materials.

I use carefully selected solid brass and stainless steel fittings, chosen for their strength, durability and resistance to corrosion.

Rope ends are neatly finished with traditional waxed whipping twine, while leather pieces are securely assembled and coated with a conditioning balm.

Before leaving the workshop, every collar and lead is carefully checked by hand, ready to accompany you and your dog on your next adventure.

Collars and leads in the shop come in set sizes, and the size guide shows you how to measure your dog.

Ready-to-ship items are dispatched within 1–3 working days. Standard sizes are usually held in small quantities, but if your chosen item is out of stock, it can be made to order within 2 weeks. Bespoke orders are individually handcrafted and take approximately 2–3 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Rope or leather: which is right for my dog?

Rope suits dogs who swim or roll in everything, because it's washable, won't rot and dries quickly.

Leather is a good choice if you love a classic look that develops character with age. It's fine to get wet on walks but shouldn't be soaked, and it needs conditioning every few months.

What is a spliced dog lead?

A lead where the loops are made by weaving the rope back into itself instead of tying knots or using clamps, which keeps it strong and smooth.

Will the brass fittings tarnish?

Solid brass won't rust, but it naturally darkens to a patina over time. A brass polish brings back the shine.

How do I care for a leather collar or lead?

Wipe off mud with a damp cloth, let it air dry away from radiators and direct sun, then rub in a little leather balm or beeswax conditioner regularly.

There's a full guide on the Care Instructions page.

Can I get a piece made to a specific size?

Yes, through the bespoke service. Pieces bought in the online shop come in set sizes.
